Dealing With High Wind Driving in the Texas Panhandle

The Panhandle and much of West Texas see sustained winds strong enough to genuinely affect how a vehicle handles, especially on open highway with nothing to break the gusts. Taller vehicles, trucks, SUVs, anything towing a trailer, feel it most, but any car can get pushed off line by a strong enough crosswind.

What High Wind Actually Does to Your Car

A steady crosswind pushes you gradually toward one side of your lane, which you can usually correct with light, constant steering pressure. Gusts are different, they hit suddenly and fade just as fast, which is what actually catches drivers off guard and causes an overcorrection.

How to Handle It

  • Keep both hands on the wheel and grip a little firmer than usual on open, exposed highway.
  • Slow down. Lower speed gives wind less leverage on your vehicle and gives you more time to correct.
  • Anticipate gusts near overpasses, gaps in tree lines, and open fields, wind often intensifies suddenly in these spots.
  • If a gust pushes you, correct with light steering input. Don't overcorrect, the wind will often ease as quickly as it hit.
  • Give extra space to high-profile vehicles like trucks and RVs, they're more affected by wind and may drift more than expected.

Know When to Pull Over

If wind conditions make it genuinely hard to hold your lane, especially while towing or driving a taller vehicle, it's reasonable to pull off and wait it out. Pushing through conditions that exceed your comfort or your vehicle's stability isn't worth the risk.

Preparation Matters as Much as Reaction

Checking the forecast before a long West Texas drive and knowing which stretches tend to be most exposed can help you plan around the worst of it. It's the same forward-thinking habit taught throughout our driving safety courses across the state, plan for the conditions instead of reacting to them after the fact.
