Black ice forms a thin, transparent layer over the road that looks just like wet pavement, which is exactly what makes it dangerous. Most drivers don't know they're on it until the car starts to slide. Texas doesn't see it often, but when a cold front follows rain or when temperatures dip overnight, it shows up fast and drivers who aren't expecting it are the ones who end up in the ditch.
Ice doesn't form evenly across a road. It shows up first in the shaded spots that stay colder longer bridges and overpasses, since cold air circulates both above and below the roadway, and low-lying areas under trees or near underpasses. If you notice frost on your car's windshield or on grass near the road, treat every bridge and shaded stretch ahead as potentially icy, even if the road you're currently on looks completely dry.
The road ahead will look slightly darker and glossier than the pavement around it, almost like a wet patch, but your tires will feel unusually quiet. A sudden loss of road noise or a light, floaty feeling in the steering wheel is often the first real sign, and by the time you notice it, you're already on the ice.
Give yourself extra following distance and extra time. Reduce your speed well before bridges and overpasses rather than braking on them, and avoid using cruise control in conditions where ice is possible, it can prevent you from reacting quickly enough if the tires lose traction. A few extra minutes of caution costs you nothing; losing control at speed can cost a lot more.
